Corridori Cycle Sport are an official Specialized ‘Body Geometry Bike Fit center’ who in conjunction with Dr Andy Pruitt PA, director of the Boulder Centre for Sports Medicine in the US, have developed the BG F.I.T, a bike fitting system that aims to fit the bike to the body. We have two qualified staff, the store owner Guy Rowland and Manager Paul Smith, between them they have over sixty years of club riding and well over forty years of working in Specialist cycle retailers.

The key is in the title, ‘Bike Fit’, essentially we do every thing possible to make your bike fit you, not the other way around. ‘Bike Fit’ is not just about your size and how long your inside leg is or how tall you are, many online sizing charts simply ask for this kind of data, key that in and hey presto this supposedly gives you the ultimate position, or does it?

With ‘Bike Fit’ we look at your goals and as such what is the ultimate position you need to reach them, naturally someone who comes into us wanting to ride short distance time trials will need a different set up to someone whose goals are to cycle 60-80 miles a day from Lands End to John O’Groats. We look to see if you are carrying any injuries, if you have varus, valgus or a flat forefoot, we look how wide or narrow your stance is, if your ‘IT’ bands are tight, how long your hamstrings are, how flexible your back, neck, hips, ankles and shoulders are, much attention is given to the structure of your feet, pedal and cleats interface and positioning, gradually we build up a profile of you as an individual.

After this procedure we determine how each piece of what we have seen relates to how you have been riding, as before we make any adjustments we analyse you on your current set up, only then do we start to make any adjustments. When you leave you will have the relevant information from both before and after the ‘Bike Fit’.

Some riders comment that surely rider position and set up and how they are achieved have over the years been based on theories, many of which naturally can differ slightly. For sure the ‘Body Geometry Bike Fit’ is only one such theory, although in our opinion Specialized have done nothing extreme, what they have simply done is fill in the gaps and perhaps been more thorough in certain aspects, where before we would have finished at a certain point, we can now fine tune the position even further than we had in the past and actually complete the set up much more fully. One such example is saddle height, in the past this was often set using the inside leg measurement, in stocking feet with heel on pedal at longest extension, the leg would be straight, a slight knee bend lifting heel off the pedal; both Guy and Paul have always realised that this was a starting point only. Naturally someone with a size 14 foot when actually pedaling would then end of with a different position than someone with a size 8; however with ‘Bike Fit’ we are now able measure a snap shot of the actual pedaling action; logical really!

In so many ways Specialized have simplified things as apposed to introduced complex systems, theories and data that would confuse most, many of you will find each point extremely logical and straight forward enough to both follow and understand. As such some of the information you will be given will be relevant to any other bikes you may have of course, as much of what we do is generic, plus you will see how we go about achieving your set up, so even though each bike may differ, you can simply follow aspects of the procedures when you set up your other bikes.

We do most ‘Bike Fit’ sessions at 10am on week days only, they normally take 1½ to 2 hours, although for some who may need more changes this can take longer of course, so it is always a good idea to allow for this; ‘Bike Fit’ takes as long as it takes, we do not set a time limit. In the summer we can be fully booked up to 2-3 weeks in advance, less so in the winter months, so please contact us to find out what mornings are available.

When you arrive please bring your bike and cycling kit including shoes, interms of clothing preferably wear reasonably tight fitting cycling kit, as this will enable us to see your riding characteristics far easier than we can with baggy clothing; often what we spot can be very subtle, yet these subtle points when eliminated by any changes can result in significant improvements.

Please note we do a basic back and shoulder examination which will include a few mobility exercises, the gentlemen will often remove their jersey for this, although not compulsory so by all means keep your jersey on if you prefer; ladies naturally leave their cycling tops on! We make sure your foot/pedal interface is accurate, as such this will include quite a lot of attention to your feet and your foot structure, much of the first half of the BG Fit is done with no shoes and socks on although the area is carpeted so not cold under foot. Most of the second half of the BG fit is done on a turbo trainer, as such you may want to bring a towel as you will get hot.

The whole process is done in store; be reassured that you are not whisked off and shut away in a secluded private room, as we use a dedicated ‘Bike Fit’ area in the actual shop, part of the area is partitioned to offer some privacy, yet open enough in an attempt to make people feel comfortable. Although you are visible to visitors the layout of the ‘Bike Fit’ area is such that we are seldom disturbed. This is also one reason we start most at 10am when the shop has far less visitors than it does during the afternoon. In the ‘Cycling Weekly’ article in the header above you will see we do use a massage table, although note this is for a few minutes only, measuring hamstring length, hip flex,’ IT' bands and quads.

Please make sure that the items that may need adjusting can be, applies especially to the seat pin, handle bars and stem, plus of course make sure the shoe/pedal cleats can both undone and fully adjusted and not clogged with mud, as this will enable us to have full movement side to side, forward and backwards, so that we can obtain the perfect position, cycle clothing naturally preferred, so that we can see your posture more easily and take the required measurements more accurately. .

Specialized Bike Fit area, at Corridori Cycle Sport
This is our instore dedictated ‘Bike Fit’ area, an open enough environment in an attempt to make people feel comfortable yet with some partitioning to offer some privacy.

The whole session costs £120.00 plus any parts if need be, although where ever possible we simply use your existing equipment, more often than not providing the bike is the correct size to start with then we can achieve what we need to without any additional equipment changes. For sure other Specialized retailers offer this service, but few can match the vast experience of Guy and Paul, as mentioned at the beginning, between them they have over sixty years of club riding and well over forty years of working in Specialist cycle retailers, it is that experience combined with their knowledge of the ‘Body Geometry Bike Fit’ that means that Corridori are well worth considering for anyone who is interested in booking this service; the feedback to date has been superb, in a few cases the positions have changed dramatically, although it is just as common for many to comment what a difference that even small changes have made.

One thing that Specialized are adamant about is that we can not offer our own personal advice relating to any type of stretching or suggestions to anything even remotely relating to corrective exercises, as this could be seen as 'physio' and naturally we are not qualified. For anyone locally who would like a recommendation where they can get such advice, ”Take My Pain Away”, is one of Surrey’s premier treatment centres for aches, pains, injuries, and rehabilitation, Osteopath Adam Dallison is himself a very experienced racing cyclist and has helped many local riders, Paul and Guy included.

We have recently started to keep some of the ‘Customer comments and Feedback’ after ‘Bike Fit’ that may be of interest

I appreciate you spending so much time with me and helping me understand how it all fits together. I knew the bike fit would help but the new set up makes my knees feel much stronger already. I feel much more like a 'real' cyclist! Thanks again,Nathan

220110: Paul, thank you for the spreadsheet, and thanks again for Fit.The difference on the way home was stunning - despite the weather, I found myself cycling 1-2 gears higher the whole route, and after a couple of miles of reminding myself to use the hoods it quickly became completely natural and extremely comfortable. I shall be back when I'm ready for the bike upgrade. Best wishes, Gary

281109: Guy, thank you for the BG Fit details, I enjoyed the evaluation session yesterday and I look forward to putting the results to the test! I was impressed with your shop, set up, and the professional approach to detail and will certainly have no hesitation in recommending BG Fit to my cycling buddies. Michael

011109: Paul, thank you for the emailing my BG fit results - will let you know how I get on....if I end up in hospital after forgetting I cannot touch the ground - remember to bring flowers! (edit from Paul, we put saddle up 40mm) Sadly did not get out today because of the appalling weather so roll on next Friday!!!!!!? 290709: Hi Guy,Just to thank you again for the Bike Fit last week. I did a hilly club ride at the weekend and the position did feel much improved; no pins and needles in my hands, no aching knees the following day – joy! Should have had it done years ago! Thanks again, see you all soon, Steve

240609: Paul; completed my 330 mile ride to Aachen on 7th June - no back, knee or hip pain. Greatly reduced pin and needles in my feet. However "contact area" ruined ! Clearly need a much better pair of shorts. Should have done the BG Fit years ago. Many thanks once again, won't hesitate to recommend you, Regards. Jon

040609: Paul, thank you very much for today, I really enjoyed the session and appreciate how much time and effort you put in, The new position felt good and I’m sure will continue to be so once my legs are more used to it. 010609: Paul, Thought you might appreciate some feedback. Much, much better on the bike – more comfort, more power on the climbs, easier to use the drops on long flats pushing into the wind...Robert.

070509: Paul, just to let you know that the fitting was a great experience, very informative. I was able to storm home in a bigger gear that I would normally and my position on the hoods is much improved. Thanks and all the best, Richard

200409: Thanks Paul, I really enjoyed the session today, and I'm itching to get out on the bike and put ina good long ride to see how it feels. The new footbeds certainly feel better instantly; it feels like I'm more in contact with the bike. Thanks again, Paul

160409: Hello Paul, Many thanks for this. I thought yesterday's Bike Fit session was excellent.I went out this morning for a 20 mile ride and can confirm that my riding position is much improved. I find myself using the brake covers as the main cycling position now whereas before I used the top bars. No pins and needles either so overall money really well spent. Thanks for the information on the L2P - I think the route out of London will be really useful for us.Kind regards, Mike

260309: Paul,Thanks for your efforts.I’ve done a couple of “long” rides since, of 45 and 50 miles, with only minimal reaction from the hip.So far, so good! Rob Tate
